What is preventative dental care for pets?
Preventative dental care is everything a pet owner and veterinarian can do to keep your pet’s teeth clear of plaque, tartar and decay. Prevention is the key to excellent dental care. Here at Animal Medical Centre South we have many tools to help you keep your pet’s teeth clean and healthy. We offer pet-safe toothpaste, water additives, enzymatic chews and even special dental diets.
What happens during a veterinary dental examination and cleaning?
Dental exams and cleanings are done in the clinic from Monday to Thursday. They are completed under a general anesthetic to ensure your pet is not moving and we do not hurt them. We are able to clean and examine above and below the gum line. This level of sedation allows us to conduct full mouth X-rays. We can look for medical conditions in their gums and determine if they’ll need dental surgery, such as an extraction. At the end of every dental cleaning, we provide a comprehensive home package to help you maintain optimal oral health.
What are dental extractions?
Sometimes dental disease has progressed so far that extraction of the tooth is the best option. In order for us to decide if this is necessary for your pet, we refer to the physical examination of the tooth and the radiograph taken during the cleaning and examination. Every case is unique and our doctors and technicians will always keep you up-to-date when it comes to possible extractions required for your pet.
